BIKING “INN TO INN” THROUGH
THE SAN JUAN ISLANDS...

MEET OUR GUIDES

  • Andy

(started in 2019) - Andrew was born and raised on a small island in Southeast Alaska. During his time in Alaska he spent most of his life on the water and coastal mountain range. Once he graduated high school he became a kayak guide in Alaska. Then after he left for New Zealand to travel and be a kayak guide down under! Now Andrew spends his time traveling around the world during the off season to places like Germany, New Zealand, Mexico, and Austria. He loves to answer all your questions about wilderness in the Pacific Northwest and kayaking.

  • Angie

Office Manager - Angie grew up in the San Juan Islands and has cycled nearly every road on San Juan Island. She loves living here because of all the wildlife she gets to see just on a simple bicycle ride to town. Angie is the person who plans your vacation details once you are booked and makes sure the guides are prepared for your group. It is important to her that guests experience the best of everything; food, accommodations, routes, gear, and awesome guides. She loves to explore new places and enjoys bicycle adventures wherever she can. She is happiest though when volunteering for a community cause or working to preserve wild animals and their land. Besides raising awareness for local wildlife preservation, she has volunteered with her husband in Mexico (sea turtle preservation), South Africa (wildlife and land preservation), and Thailand (elephant preservation). She is the friendly face at our Office/T-Shirt Shop in Friday Harbor. She'll help you choose which tour is best for you through e-mail and phone calls and give you advice for your vacation.

  • Annie

(Started in 2018) - Field Director/Guide - Annie was born and raised in the mountains of upstate New York. When she was younger she loved whales and knew she wanted to work and live around them. Getting people outside and experiencing nature has always been important to her. In addition to guiding she also does behind the scenes work supporting guides and maintaining gear. You can find Annie sending tours off on their adventures, resupplying on a beach or welcoming them home.

  • Brooke

Brooke grew up spending her time in the forests and lakes of Michigan. She credits her adventurous lifestyle to a 15 day bike tour she took on the west side of Michigan when she was 13. Since then she has explored many outdoor activities, become passionate about rock climbing, mountain biking, kayaking, and bike tours. She graduated from Central Michigan University in 2015 with a degree in Outdoor Recreation and Environmental Science. After graduating, she spent a year in Colorado working with youth and their families in the outdoors, inspiring environmental stewardship and sustainability through natural science education. She then took that mentality to Duluth, Minnesota where Lake Superior and the many mountain bike trails provided a perfect playground to kayak and bike. Since moving to Washington, she has fallen for the San Juan Islands, the Salish Sea, and the wildlife that call it their home.

  • Carrie

(Started in 2006) - Owner/Operations Manager - Carrie is the behind the scenes person who makes sure everything is running perfectly while you are on your trip. She is in charge of making sure our gear is in top working condition and that your guides have the support they need. You may eat some of her famous homemade pesto during a picnic lunch. Carrie grew up exploring the woods, back roads, and shorelines of Maine. She is an avid cyclist and spent many months cycling New Zealand and Australia as well as rafting the Grand Canyon and hiking throughout the Americas. She became a registered Maine Sea Kayaking Guide in 2004 and became a registered bike mechanic in 2018. Most importantly, Carrie is an amazing mother. She is a recreation and outdoor enthusiast who enjoys sharing her love for outdoor recreation with her 2 daughters and husband. She and her beautiful family call San Juan Island home.

  • Gunnar

(Started in 2019) Gunnar is a seventh generation islander born and raised on San Juan Island. He later moved to Orcas Island and graduated highschool there. Gunnar has a love for the many beautiful hidden spots on the island, as well as an adoration for the wildlife found here. You can find Gunnar biking, sea kayaking, whitewater kayaking, one wheeling, snowboarding, enjoying delicious craft beer, or just sitting at the beach enjoying life. His favorite part of the island to bike is Mt. Constitution, as the incline makes his legs numb, the ride itself becomes completely consuming. Gunnar is currently attending Portland State University, as well as working at a yacht tender dealership in the off-season. While working Gunnar likes to get to know his guests on a personal level, which is his favorite part of the job.

  • Johannes

Founder/Owner - Johannes grew up on San Juan Island and has been bicycling the San Juan Islands since he was five years old. In 2000, he and Angie (wife) started TerraTrek Bicycle Vacations to offer guests a first class bicycle vacation with a \"locals perspective\" of the San Juan Islands. Today, you can find Johannes on the phone planning vacations with our guests and making sure every trip meets the highest quality imaginable. Mail keeps pouring into the office addressed to Johannes, reminding us of how ‘top rate’ TerraTrek has become. Johannes is active in our community; serving on the San Juan Island Parks Commission, and served many years on the San Juan County Marine Resources Committee and coached high school boys soccer and high school girls volleyball teams. He is also active with the San Juan Island Kayak Association and the Pacific Whale Watch Operators Association. Johannes enjoys cycling, swimming, kayaking, snow boarding, and kite boarding.

Awesome weekend

“Awesome weekend”

We all had a great time and appreciated the planning that went into making it an awesome weekend. As a vegan eater, I was impressed at how the meals were all cleverly planned out to make everyone happy. Great job, Tim!

TIMES AND DISTANCES

We cycle an average of 25-30 miles during each day but can add mileage if you would like more distance. We usually begin our activity around 10 am and finish around 3-4 pm. Terrain varies from island to island but most areas are easy (gentle rolling hills) to moderately hilly. Routes run along the low-traffic country roads and you can stop when ever you like to check out the amazing views or visit a local art studio along the way. We offer a support shuttle so that you can catch a lift at anytime.

GOURMET MEALS

Starting with lunch on the first day and ending with lunch on your last day we provide all meals in between*. We feel that what you eat can be a major factor in the quality of your expedition and therefore we proute ourselves on the quality and heartiness of our well prepared meals. Prior to your trip we send out food questionnaires and customize all of our meals to the various dietary requirements of our guests.

*Our 4, 5 and 6 day tours allow one night for the guests to explore town on their own. This evening's dinner is not included in the cost of the trip.

**We do not cover the cost of alcoholic beverages with dinner.

PROFESSIONAL GUIDES

We strongly believe that an outstanding professional guide can make the difference between a good trip and a fabulous trip, therefore we place a lot of emphasis on providing the best guides available. We choose guides who are friendly, knowledgeable, have a great attitude, are excellent leaders, great teachers and who love what they do. We provide two guides on all of our bicycling expeditions groups of 6 or more.

SMALL PERSONAL GROUPS

A great trip involves many factors. One of these is the group size. A smaller group is safer, allows for more interactions between the guides and guest and gives our guests a chance to know each other. Furthermore, we can also adjust and modify the trip to the individual desires and interests of the group, allowing our guests to participate in various activities ranging from birding to advanced kayaking to custom bicycle routes for more mileage to photography. For all these reasons and more we keep our regularly scheduled multi-day expedition group size to 8 guests.

“Inn to Inn Bike Tour”

We have not tried this type of trip before, and it far exceeded my expectations. Andy was excellent. The lunches he prepared were delightful, and he made sure all our needs were met. He was friendly, knowledgeable, punctual, and professional. The trip flowed very smoothly, and I had a great time! We feel so fortunate to have had this experience.

“Great time on the San Juans”
Reviewed October 04, 2021

"Our guide Austin was wonderful. Accommodations were elegant. All the meals were lovely. Our first use of e-bikes was great! We got a good feel for all three islands. Advance communication was very good. Austin was able to adjust to the weather and turn what could have been a disappointing day into a good one. He was sensitive to our needs and provided good information. The bikes were great. We highly recommend!"

SEA KAYAKING TOUR OR WHALE WATCHING TOUR INCLUDED

Each of TerraTrek's tours includes a day on the water... either on a whale watching excursion or a six hour sea kayaking adventure. If you decide on sea kayaking you might see orca whales, bald eagles, porpoise, seals, minke whales, seabirds and other marine life. Enjoy lunch, picnic style on a secluded beach, then check out nearby tide pools brimming with sea life.

If you would rather choose to be on a boat than a kayak, we also offer a whale watching cruise aboard the 'Odyssey'. Here you can sit back and relax in comfort while listening to the naturalists talk about the wildlife you see. After a day on the water, we will take you back to the ferry in Friday Harbor where we bid farewell until your next TerraTrek vacation!
